I have been doing extensive research online, to find others who have seen this shadow person.A tall dark looming figure in a top hat that appears at random moments when we are alone.For a long time I didn't talk about him, people tend to think you are crazy if you mention this kind of thing. Well I know what I saw was real , it scared the piss out of me. It has been years since I seen him, I used to practice voodoo and black magic.Not until recently did I find out about the Baron , and make the connection which was at the time I saw him I owned a real voodoo doll from new Orleans.A week later I was in a car accident and had a near death experience. Some people seem to think that the top hat man is a bringer of death or destruction , much like the moth man.However, if this really is Baron Samedi...it could mean much more.The Baron is known for his superior connection to the world of the dead, perhaps we can see him as a groundskeeper to the gates of the dead world.I will be conducting research to add more substance to this topic.Right now one thing is apparent , most of the people who saw the man in the top hat were teenagers or children at the time.If you have any information that you would like to share please comment! I would love to hear your stories and experiences with the man in the top hat!
Is Baron Samedi really the man in the top hat?
This is a very good question, its hard to say who the man in the top hat really is; people have seen him in many states and even in different countries.We do not know for sure if this is who we are seeing,but it's a lead! Another source claims that the man in the top hat is the " right hand man of satan" a fallen angel,demon. There must be a way to summon " the man in the top hat " , I'm not sure if that is a good idea or not...although if he could have harmed us, he would have. I guess it will be a risk that I will have to consider.

Phase one :protect thyself from the unknown
Ok so this can be dangerous business summoning a spirit or god that I know very little about.
Right now I'm doing some extra research on protection spells and circles that can be cast.I need the most powerful protection,because I do not know what I'm up against.
The only type of protection circle I have ever casted was one of salt ,crystals and colored candles.Candle magic is something all on it's own and you must be careful what colors and scents you use. I will be using white (purity) red (love) any other suggestions? In doing so, I will also be calling the four corners by using the elements of earth,fire,water and air.
I am doing more research about calling up arch angels for protection.It's kind of up in the air and quite debatable for me. I do believe in angels,but I also know that we should not abuse what they offer.

I have yet to decide a date for the summoning, I have been considering Halloween, the summoning will most definitely begin at 3am in the morning.On the contrary to what most people think about midnight, 3am is actually the witching hour.I am also trying to set the conduction up for a live stream web cam session so everyone can see what does or doesn't happen.

I said in my hub that I am not scared of ghosts (spirits of dead people), but I would not want to try summoning demons (fallen angels). I have never experienced the man in the top hat, nor do I want to. I believe it's up to God whether a demon can harm me or not, and that is my only hope.
If you haven't read it, you might give "The Screwtape Letters" by C.S. Lewis a try. I enjoyed it. Great allegory about demons going after a man.
I believe you are correct, If there is a God..he would protect us from demonic forces. I still do not know if the "man in the top hat" was a demon or not. Ty for the book suggestion, C.S Lewis is a great writter.
He sounds a lot like Baron Top Hat. Of course he would appear if you were into voodoo. He must want to work with you. He is not a demon. All Barons are loa, or spirits that work under Bon Dieu or the Great God.
I've seen Baron Top Hat, or High Hat as I call him since childhood. He is very sweet. I've never known a Baron who would harm people. He is a magician, healer, and gentleman among other things.
Top Hat can be skeletal, black, white, or any other race. Hope that helps you out.

I'm not sure if hes demon or not..sweet... IDK he scares me and many people. He has came very close to me before,touched my thigh when I was sleeping.

Hi Dollhex! I've practiced hoodoo and voodoo for years on my own. The loa are spirits under God, not demons. But I've found my Baron does not behave at all like he is supposed to in the "Official" rules.
Uh, how did he touch your leg? Many in voodoo claim he is sexless, which is odd as he seems to like women. A lot, LOL! I work with him on sex and protective magic, healing magic too. Yes, that makes me a witch. :)
I will warn you, people who practice only voodoo have very short fuses. Either they won't answer you, or they will scream about how you don't know anything if your experience doesn't fit those offical rules. Be careful who you talk too. I'm sure they mean well, but the whole online community is uptight.
From what I can figure, Baron does as he darn well pleases. We humans made up his lore and mythology, not him. Right now he seems to be branching out to witches as we do everything very differently.
I don't fear him after all, and I don't follow set rules. I'll be the first to tell you traditionalists will say I'm full of it. But Baron seem,s to be reaching out to all of mankind and I'd like to know why myself.
He is also based on a much older native god that was in place long before the slave trade hit Haiti. That god swore, drank, and loved to chase women.
i know who he is...his name is Baron Samadi Baron Samadi is the leader of the Guédé, loa with particular links to magic, ancestor worship and death.
As well as being master of the dead, Baron Samedi is also a giver of life. He can cure any mortal of any disease or wound, if he thinks it is worthwhile. His powers are especially great when it comes to voodoo curses and black magic. Even if somebody has been afflicted by a hex which brings them to the verge of death like you did..., they will not die if the Baron refuses to dig their grave. So long as this mighty spirit keeps them out of the ground they are safe. He also ensures all corpses rot in the ground to stop any soul being brought back as a brainless zombie. What he demands in return depends on his mood. Sometimes he is content with his followers wearing black, white or purple clothes or using sacred objects; he may simply ask for a small gift of cigars, rum, black coffee, grilled peanuts or bread. But sometimes the Baron requires a voodoo ceremony to help him cross over into this world.

Hello Nightcat! Thank you for asking. The research I have been conducting involves summoning baron samedi or(man in the top hat) so I have been doing all the preparation for that. I do not wan't to walk into this blindly.Although I have experience at summonings, they can be dangerous so I'm taking precautions.Right now I'm learning and researching for the most powerfull protection circles to cast.Also I would like some of you guys opinions on something.Should I be allone when I summon him?
Well, from my experience with, let's use the term 'Higher Beings'. In my experience with Higher Beings, if you have a personal tie to the being that you are trying to summon, as it seems you do with the Baron, then it is usually better to summon or invoke them alone. They respond better to a feel a familiarity. That's not to say that you shouldn't take precautions, such as letting someone know when you plan on Invoking the Baron and how long you suspect it to take. But as a whole, I think this will work better if you ask to speak to him alone.
Also, if you want to be certain of his good graces when he arrives, if he does, because it seems that Loa are a little more fickle about answering summons, I would recommend that you have things he likes nearby to give to him as gifts. Tobacco plugs, whiskey, some food, or somethings of the like would probably ease your passageway and make him not only more willing to show up in the first place, but also to answer your questions and perhaps work with you in the future. It is never a bad idea to keep channels open with powerful beings.
On a side note, if you are still preparing you spells and protections, and are truly worried that the Baron might lash out at you, I would suggest invoking the names of the Arch Angel Michael as his domains include the protection of people, and the name of Metatron, as he is an Angel of Knowledge. If you plan on doing it at night or in a trance, I would recommend Gabriel as well, for he has domain over sleep.
All in all, I hope your summoning goes well and that you get long with the Baron. I wouldn't be too worried as he doesn't seem to be a pointlessly or causelessly malicious being.

hello, i have read alot about this guy and i know alot about him through my own experience. this guy is not to be fucked with, he is a demon that has a strong connection to the occult, and summoning him is the worst possible idea. demons cant hurt you unless you are in AGREEMENT with them, that means attempting to communicate or contact them. dont be another idiot that encounters terrible things because they just got too curious. this guy has nothing good about him despite what Nightcat was saying, he has watched me from my bedside for hours and has the ability to speak, he put off nothing but dark and horrible vibes. my guess is that your mind is made up and that you are going to go through with this no matter what, but i will tell you straight, you will regret making contact... if you want to talk at length email me then ill give you my phone number, i know alot about demonic entities and their power. my email is plablaka@live.com
He is no Demon, no more than death itself is. People are innately afraid of Death, hence they are afraid of him. He is the loa of death, yet also the giver of life. He guards the gate, if the Baron will not dig your grave, you will not die. He is very talkative. He appears when asked, but does desire gifts in order to stay. Strong coffee I have heard, as do Cigars, are things he enjoys.
He appearing to you often times means that there is something he needs you to know. But you have to open the door to listen to him.
I find it funny to hear jonas there saying the baron has watched for hours him at his bedside. Baron Samedi has better things to do than to give the creeps to someone. He has parties to attend to, and he is the life of those parties.

this might sound normal, but i have drawn the figure of a dancing skeleton wearing a suit and a hat like that, and also holding a staff since i can remember. and i didnt knew his existence.
i sorta remember the moment when i first did it, more or less, i remember the decision of drawing that character and i remember not thinking in anything really out of the ordinary. i dont really remember when this hapened just that i was much younger
the thing is i didnt know this character had a name (at least like a specific name because i might have been influenced by mexican culture and its skeletons, which is a country that influences a lot the latin american area where i belong. but i jumped when i opened your post and saw that drawing. hell im still kinda shocked; been reading some posts about him and what he represents (im so getting a book on vudu from the library tomorrow)

im also wondering what happened with you, did you communicate? i hope everything is all right. If he is like i been drawing him, hes spicy and a party lover but hes also nostalgic and even if he seems to be relaxed, hes always aware of deeper mysteries. He seems to be the center of the party, the coolest guy but also the most imponent one, even scary when he wants to be.
i remember when i was 16 and i was laying on the floor watching johnny quest with classical music...(trying to enjoy my first acid trip) and in front of but not obstructing the t.v. was this tall figure with a top hat and suit jacket ...the ones with tails just a shadow...just standing there i kept it to myself and since princess and the frog came out i thought "the shadow man" was just far too familiar so i looked it up!!!??? any ideas?????
I was wondring if he has appeared to anyone dressed other than has been described. I was 16 when a being showed himself to me. He was tall skelatal with a wide brimmed cow boy hat and a long trench coat. He was so pale he skin seemed translucent. For the most part he ignored me,although I was a owl in a bare tree. It was night and raining. He then turned and looked at me and it felt as if my soul was layed bare. Everything have done and will do was layed out for his inspection. my brother has summoned the baron before and had taken time to prepare. He set out cigars and snacks and used a little metal skull for a focal point. when i walked into the room, i could tell he was there. The whole time I didn't really do anything at all. I just stared at the focal point. My brother and friends could hear the Baron speaking to them. I couldn't. I kinda felt closed minded because of that. Later on during the month, I found out about my friends "Intangible Friends" as I call them. I couldn't hear or see them. But my friends could. I eventually got two Intangible friends that I called Stanlee and Red. I could barely see them or hear them. Then my brother told me after I talked about them, "That could be the Baron messing with you and your friends." Now I am confused. I don't know what to think or what to do. I feel stuck. But my brother says that I could just ask him to leave me alone. But I'm still uncertain as to whether or not They are the Baron. So just so you know, weird things might happen.
I have never seen the man in the top hat. I was informed that the Tarot Card meaning for Death, instead of being literal Death by dying, but more so Death to the present, and a Birth of Change. When I was a teenager, asleep, a picture was taken and the man with the top hat appeared. I've looked and studied, even had the lines traced out for me, but have never once seen the figure. Even though it was printed for everyone else to see. No one knows this figures true Symbolic meaning, I'm sure he makes sure of it. I see him as a warning, to be prepared and aware.

Baron Samedi is indeed known to wear a top hat. He has affection for tobacco products such as cigars. you need not fear summoning him to speak with you as long as you respect tradition. Be sure to make offerings to him such as Rum in which habaneros have been steeped. Other offerings I suggest would be a cigar as I mentioned before or things such as rice and black beans, corn, peanuts, black coffee, grilled meats that have been heavily peppered.
Though one thing to remember is The baron is a mischief maker. So you must remember to perform the ritual correctly. Before attempting to Summon The baron. Be sure to study Papa Legba he must open the door.

look i know an EVIL white woman named Sharon Litchfield...she took my daughter away from me and brainwashed my babys mother into keeping my child from me...she is my babys mothers aunt...she is taking me to court, pressing false charges on me and anything you can imagine..she is trying to destroy my life!!! i was sort of joking to my friend the other day about how I should ask Baron Samedi to destroy her for me... well last night at about 4 or 5 am my kitchen light turned on then turned off i was scared grabbed a bat and walked around my house looking for a burglar or intruder...but nobody was present...could this be baron??? im scared and i dont know what to do or believe anymore pLEASE someone tell me what this could be???
Me and my friend have seen him he keeps us awake at knight and puts thoughts in my head and We call him HatMan.At first he said he was the devil but after reading this he could be the Baron.
I have seen the hatman. I was 19 when I saw him. I went out drinking and came home passed out. Something woke me up about 3am and I saw at the end of my bed...a very tall man, 8ft tall, slim, no face, Black trench coat, and white brimmed hat. He stared at me which seemed like forever. I was so frozen with fear I could not move. All that I could speak was no! no! no!. It felt like a power from him was trying to pull me out of the bed but I managed to hang on to my boyfriend to prevent being taken. It felt like wind was blowing or something else I cant explain. My boyfriend never woke up through my screams. He was drunk passed out. I eventually went to sleep but I woke up feeling traumatized. I was embarrassed to tell anyone. I got drunk the next night with friends and told them about what happened. They laughed at me and said it was the angel of death. I was drinking so much at that time I ended up with a malfunctioned liver and was sick for one month after my hatman experience. I will never forget that night. I always wondered if I was crazy or if it was real. I just knew it had to be real. I have had nightmares but this drove something into my mind so that I dont forget that it was real. Everytime someone would talk about ghosts or something creepy I always had a story of my own. Most thought I was silly but one day I told my daughter and she took me so seriously that she looked online and found a picture of the hatman. I relived my experience all over again by seeing that picture. I didnt know that others had seen him too. Hundreds and thousands of people. I dont mess with spells and such. I believe in Jesus. I think the hatman is pure evil. Its not a good thing to see him. I dont feel very lucky to have seen him. I do feel very curious as to why I had to see him. Was I that bad of a person? Was I doomed to die but didnt? Was I chosen to be taken somewhere but didnt? I think this will boggle my mind for the rest of my life. I do love reading others stories of the hatman so I know I am not alone in this. I am now 40 and my memory is still very clear of the hatman. I know we will know who he is when we die. It seems, before this thread went all wonky, that this "Man in the top hat" is simaliar to Thanatos, Greek personification or incarnation of death. He travels the mortal realm not to seek destruction, but to guide lost souls to their destination. it is not death he brings, but a helping hand for those that are not sure what they should do once they cross over. I would very much like to know what happened with your summoning although I fear you will not even read this. The spiritual realm has often had my interest, but I have only toyed with it in the past. Most of those being ill prepared and leaving me with visions I still cant see if I look directly at them.
Now just a theory with no evidence, Is it possible that the strength of each branch of spirituality is amplified by location or root you are closest to? Being in the US, would it not be prudent to seek the advice of a native american shaman instead of the wiccan groups from the old world? I've seen him. I had no idea who he was until this year, when I became curious to find out what exactly it was I saw. I was young- about 17, and he appeared, the skull in the top hat, beckoning me through a reflection. I thought I was insane until a few years later, a boyfriend at the time reported to me a vision he had had in a mirror, and described the exact same vision I had seen. To this day I haven't seen him since, but I wonder why he appeared to me.
I find it both amusing and sad that so many people have said that Baron Samedi is evil; either through their experiences or ignorance. I just read through every single comment here, and though some of the things you've seen or went through are horrifying, I really don't see the Baron as trying to harm anyone. If anything, I would take his appearance as a sign or a warning - Baron Samedi is a Loa of Death, Fertility, and Earthly pleasures. He is a guardian of the crossroads between Life and the Afterlife; he is the judge of all souls who cross over. He is also a protector of children and Life; to any who claim he is responsible for your accidents or pain, try looking at what you have freely admitted to doing before or after you have seen him.
Drinking. Drugs. Partying. Irresponsibility with your own lives. While the Baron embodies what is considered "a good time" (he parties with the best of them), he does not bring death or suffering - He teaches to love and enjoy life, because every single one of us, no matter how rich or poor, are not immune to death. And for those of you I am writing this comment to, you were obviously not loving your life as you should. Enjoy it to it's fullest, but don't kill yourself in the process.
To the dear who started this hub, I am curious about a few things.
1) have you performed your ritual yet?
2) how can you have practiced Voodoo and not known of Baron Samedi? There are so many different Spirits in this practice, but he is one of the more famous, if only due to pop culture. He is the leader of his particular group of Loa. If anything, I'd think you'd know the leaders of each group; at least for your own safety, anyway.
If you have not done your ritual yet, may I suggest something? Baron Samedi is a Voodoo Spirit. Intermingling religious practices in an attempt to speak with him is probably not a good idea - and while I am all for safety when it comes to working with Spirits and Energy, I fear that casting a protective circle, or calling on protective beings would be insulting to the Baron.
Best case scenerio: You will be ignored.
Worst case?: Well... how do you react to a personal insult? Not favorably, I'd imagine. I've never been witness to what a member of the Loa do when insulted, but I can't imagine it would be pretty.
Just.. be smart. And be safe.
In my humble opinion, I don't think Baron Samedi would be messing with anyone who doesn't actively practice Vooodoo. Usually the lwa (Loa) desire some sort of offering or series of offerings and commitment to their favor before they show themselves to you. That would include Baron Samedi too. I could be wrong, but that's what I've come to learn about the Voodoo spirits. Thanks for sharing though. Super interesting hub!
